PRE-KINDERGARTEN

Preschool has had such a great second quarter. We have been working diligently on our letters in both capital and lower cases. We have mastered all of our first names without name cards and now we are busy on our last names. Our other benchmarks include snapping, buttoning, hooking, and zipping. All have successfully mastered those skills and we will be starting with shoe tying soon.
Our Art Show was a huge success and we had a great experience sampling several different forms of materials. Preschool s theme was Mosaic Art. We produced beautiful glass tile mosaic flower pots, decorated containers with tissue paper and glue, adorned wooden crosses with glass beads, created a mosaic window frame with paint swatches, made a life size American flag out of felt pieces, and expressed our favorite colors on giant letters MOSAIC ART with magazine pages. We have been very busy in Room 2-Preschool.
The children love the stories in our Happily Ever After - SuperKids Reading series. We are now enjoying a Spanish story of a turtle, while incorporating new letters, color, shape, and vocabulary words. The other focal points are sorting items into categories and identifying parts of a whole. From the CD that corresponds with the story, the children will learn to distinguish soft from hard sounds and same/different words. We will also learn position words such as in, on, around, top, middle, and bottom.
Throughout this unit, the children will strengthen their fine motor skills, learn to follow two-to-three step directions, and look at details in illustrations. The children will also be able to retell a story and learn early comprehension skills from discussions. They will begin to recognize end punctuation marks and detect rhyming words within simple text.
