LIBRARY SCIENCE/TECHNOLOGY

We have had a successful beginning as we re-introduced library services to our Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8 students.  I am especially delighted that most of the books from the St. Peter campus have been processed and added to our computer catalog.  We now have a wonderful picture book section that has proven most popular with our younger students.

Our fiction section for the upper grades has a new look as outdated materials have been replaced with newer titles and an updated inventory of all fiction and picture books has been completed. The non-fiction section is a work in progress as I evaluate the collection. For example, a number of books on science and sports are older with information incorrect or outdated. However, I am continually pulling such books and will be gradually adding newer titles to those collections. Future plans also include sorting and cataloging the many videos stored in our closet.

The students have been coming to the library for regular classes with lessons ranging from the development of good listening and participation skills to library organization, book talks, and Reader’s Theater.  Future classes for upper grades will be including locating appropriate resources, note-taking, bibliography preparation, and how to authenticate Internet sites while younger students will be learning about Caldecott and Newbery Award winners, the wide variety of genres on our shelves, and how to locate information. Our books are circulating well with students eager to borrow library books.  Teachers are also beginning to borrow materials to supplement classroom resources.

I am very happy to announce that our recent Scholastic Book Fair was a runaway success!  Thanks to the efforts of our students, parents, families and friends we were able to gross over $4000.  Over $866 of that was collected by our students during the One For Books campaign – mostly in coins!  As a result, many new books will be added to our library collections.

Reading is the key to success in so many ways. Connecting children with books and libraries is most satisfying.  It is a pleasure to be able to share in their excitement.
