EIGHTH GRADE

In Religion, we continue studying the four marks of the Church:  one, holy, catholic, and apostolic.  Toward the end of the marking period, we will begin learning more about Church history.  In Family Life, we will begin a unit on God’s gift of life to us, including the value of human life and staying healthy.

In eighth grade math, we will move from our study of plane geometry to perimeter, area, and volume of two- and three-dimensional figures.  We will then learn about ratios, rates, and proportions and how to use them to apply them to real-world situations.

We have made it to the late 1800’s and early 1900’s in history.  We will study the Progressive Era and the social and political reform that happened during this time.  Then we will begin the next unit and study the new role the United States took on in the world, including the United States interest in overseas affairs and World War I.

We are located in Central America and the Caribbean now in geography.  Then we will move south to the countries of South America and investigate how their physical and human characteristics affect and influence each other.  After that, we will begin a unit on Western Europe that includes the British Isles and Nordic Nations, Central Western Europe, and Mediterranean Europe.

Our health class will focus on violence prevention, including avoiding and preventing violence, dealing with violence, bullying and harassment, abuse, and preventing and coping with abuse.  We will learn decision making skills for standing up to harassment and how to respond nonviolently to threatening situations.

In seventh grade math, we are beginning a chapter on proportional reasoning that includes ratios, rates, proportions, and dimensional analysis.  We will use proportions to create similar figures and solve other real-world problems.  Then we will move into solving problems with percents and discuss percent of increase and decrease, as well as determining simple interest.

Our seventh grade health class is studying mental and emotional health.  We discuss self-worth, self-concept, and are learning ways to keep self-esteem positive.
