SEVENTH GRADE

With full speed ahead into the new year, the seventh grade continues to strengthen fundamental comprehension and writing skills while venturing into uncharted areas.

In Language Arts, our study of sentence structure becomes more challenging as we enter the varied and sometimes daunting area of clauses. For a break from grammar, this marking period we will learn persuasive writing as the students choose a topic that interests them to present to an audience. Also, we’ll deepen our understanding of a much needed skill: letter writing.

Tuck Everlasting behind us, the students will be honing reading comprehension and recognition and use of literary devices through reading a variety of short stories, poems, and autobiographical pieces. We will continue to discuss questions of human experience while practicing skills to process that experience given through great writing.

In History, the passionate and tumultuous times of the Revolutionary War are before us. The students will learn causes of the war, its tremendous effects on our continent and throughout the world, the political formation and foundation of our country, and the human difficulties involved in the violent break from our country’s origin.

Our study in Geography moves to the enormous and varied continent of Middle and South America. Students will learn of the surprising climates and ecosystems of the vast land, and human interaction with it.

In Religion, our study of our Savior will move to his teaching, parables, and miracles. We will continue to focus on the New Testament, in particular the Gospels, as one of our main conduits for learning about God.

Hopefully the students’ efforts in all areas—physical, academic, and social—will find new meaning in their encounter with the way of discipleship as we learn how to live from Jesus’ own words.
