Religion: Religion focuses on an in-depth study of the sacraments and the impact they have on our faith. Students better recognize the acts of worship and they learn about the roles they play while taking part in worship.
The Family Life program focuses on the students’ growth, maturity, self-awareness and the plan that God has for our family.
Math: Math reinforces concepts and operations including: place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, decimals and fractions. They will further explore geometry, measurement, percents, ratios and proportions.
Language Arts: Language Arts consists of reading, English grammar, writing, spelling and handwriting.
Reading: In reading, our students will further develop their skills and improve upon their use of strategies in reading and comprehending the various genres of literature. Our reading series exposes them to short stories, articles, poetry, autobiographies, and drama. Students will discuss cause and effect, main topics, main ideas, details and conclusions. Periodically, trade books will be used to supplement the curriculum. Students will be required to read independently and to keep and submit a reading log monthly. Also, the children will be given independent reading assignments which they will be evaluated on.
English: Fifth graders will learn English grammar and usage. They will apply and practice these skills with a variety of writing: articles, personal narratives, expository pieces, and poetry.
Spelling: Students will practice and study age-appropriate words on a weekly basis. They will learn the proper way to study these words and the application of these skills to their daily work.
Handwriting: Students will continue to refine these skills. All work excluding that of math, will be done in cursive and in ink. Whenever possible, all final copies of writing assignments should be word processed. If a student does not have access to a computer at home, one will be made available for his/her use at school.
Health: Health covers a variety of topics and includes: growth, nutrition, safety, and diseases. They will also participate in D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) which is sponsored by the Torrington Police Department.
Science: Science consists of units of study in the following areas: Systems of Living Things, the Solar System, and Light & Sound.
Social Studies: In Social Studies, the students will study the United States from the days when the Native Americans inhabited the land through the twentieth century. We will focus on the history, geography, culture, politics, and the various ethnicities which made this country what it is today.
Italian: The fifth graders will be introduced to the language and the culture of Italy.
