FOURTH GRADE

Well, we have all recovered from our VERY early winter storm and are back to business. The fourth graders will be hosting a table at the St. Peter/St. Francis School Christmas Craft Fair. They have been busy making bracelets, key chains, frames and reindeer food. All the proceeds made from our table will be divided between FISH and SP/SF. This has been a great lesson in giving for the children. More than once I have heard how much they would like to take extra pieces home with them. Those statements have lead to discussions/lessons about the purpose of our project. We’ve learned that there are many others very close to us that do not have a permanent home or a warm meal every night. We’ve talked about FISH and what it does for those in need within our community. The children now realize how they can help too. (And they are having fun along the way as well). What a great way for the students to continue learning about God in their lives; demonstration and personal experience.
We’ve been moving right along in Social Studies. We are still working our way through the regions of the U.S., but we are beginning to incorporate Connecticut history as we go. When discussing climates, economy, resources, etc., we hit on all the regions to compare and contrast.
We have been utilizing technology as much as possible. With the different levels of knowledge and hands on experience, I am making sure students are exposed to research, word processing, presentation and data usage.
In science we have moved into energy. We are just about ready to go from heat energy to magnetism. The students and I have enjoyed quite a few experiments along the way too.
As we made our way through “Journeys” in reading, we finished reading the junior edition of Treasure Island. The students loved that book and have expressed the desire to read the full edition (when they get a little bit older). We are now reading From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. This is somewhat of a difficult book but the students are up for the challenge. They can’t wait to hear more about the antics of the two main characters, and to put all the pieces together. I love to use this book across the curriculum, art, social studies, and math. We have so much to do.
With all this said, I want to take the time to wish everyone a safe and blessed Christmas. Let us all remember to keep Christ in our hearts throughout this busy time. Put the hustle and bustle aside and remember, “Jesus is the reason for the season.”
Merry Christmas!
