Welcome to fourth grade! Here is a brief over view of our curriculum for the up and coming year.
Religion- The core content of the religion series continues to be the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes as guides for living. So brush up on your fourth grade lessons and be ready to review with your children!
Math- This series involves many aspects of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers and money amounts; addition and subtraction of fractions and decimals; geometry; time; measurement; statistics and probability; and pre-algebra. Special attention is given to the critical thinking process and the use of technology.
English- This year in English the children will learn about the parts of speech; Nouns, Verbs, Pronouns, Adjectives, and Adverbs. They will be expected to incorporate their knowledge in writing strategies and techniques through poems, short stories and essays.
Reading- The theme for fourth grade reading series is Traditions. There are six sections we will follow, Journeys, American Stories, That's Amazing!, Problems Solvers, Heroes, and Nature; Friends and Foe. Through these themes we will focus on Mysteries, Plays, Poems, and Tales. Comparing and contrasting and the use of similes and metaphors are also studied.
Social Studies- Grade four studies the six regions of the U.S. Each unit systematically covers Geography, History, and the Economy of that region. The children will also learn the locations of the fifty states. Along with their regular series, the fourth grade will also study the state of Connecticut (all counties and towns).
Science- The main focus of the year will be on the following units; Classifying Living Things (characteristics of different animal and plant groups, basic needs of living things and adaptations that help living things meet their needs); Properties of Matter (physical/chemical properties, states, and effects of heat loss or gain); Magnetism and Electricity (properties of magnets, forms of electrical energy, circuits and currents); Weather and Climate ( the atmosphere, water cycle, weather patterns and predictions, and seasonal weather changes and climate).
Health- This subject will concentrate on what students can do to take care of themselves. Brief overviews of their bodies' systems, maintenance of teeth, vision and hearing, along with maintaining their health through diet, exercises and good habits.
Our class will also have specials in Music, Art, Technology, Physical Education and Spanish. I am looking forward to a very new and exciting year with your children and all of the learning experiences we are about to endeavor.
Happy Year!
