SECOND GRADE
Welcome to a new school year! Here is a short overview of some of the interesting and exciting things our Second Grade will be doing this year. Our Religion studies will help prepare the students for the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist. We will learn prayers and focus on the meaning of Mass. Through many hands on learning experiences, Social Studies will emphasize community, the various types of government, customs of many countries, and human influences on our world. During Math class, we will learn about number theory, estimation, and mathematical operations. Geometry is included, as well as measurement, data analysis, statistics, and probability. Science covers the topics of plants and animals, living and nonliving things, the Earth, matter, magnets, and nutrition. We'll begin the year with a study of the life cycle of the butterfly. We will watch the process of metamorphosis in our classroom. Our Reading program will include creative writing. We will emphasize reading for comprehension while encouraging reading for enjoyment. Our Phonics program helps students to apply phonics rules and strategies in the spelling and decoding of words. We'll study grammar, usage, mechanics, and of course, spelling! Goals in Handwriting include legible handwriting and proficiency in manuscript writing. Students will begin to use cursive lettering during the school year. We will incorporate technology skills into each subject as appropriate. We're all looking forward to a year of fun and learning!
