SECOND GRADE

We are in the middle of enthusiastically preparing for our First Reconciliation.  We're learning the importance of saying I'm sorry when we hurt others and God.  The Second Grade is focusing on learning about Jesus' forgiveness and how we can forgive others.

The Second Grade is enjoying the winter season!  We learned that yeast is a fungus by performing a bubbling science experiment with yeast and sugar.  Soon we will be experimenting with ice!  Why does it melt, how does it melt, how long does it take to melt; these questions have aroused our curiosity!  All these questions lead us to find experimental ways to find the answers!  We look forward to performing all these experiments in our new Science Lab.

Cursive writing!  So much excitement goes along with the giant step of learning to write in cursive!  The students are all doing a wonderful job with it!  Our Phonics classes have taught us how and when to divide words into syllables.  The Second Grade is full of Spelling champs!  Spelling Bees are a favorite way to review words and to be challenged by the new!

We're moving quickly to learn more about regrouping when adding and subtracting three digit numbers in Math.  Hands on applications make the learning of place value fun!  Working with money becomes real when students use pretend money to shop at the classroom store!   The students are working to master addition and subtraction facts through twenty, and love to compete as teams to see who can say them the fastest.  By the end of the year, we'll be multiplying factors through the number three.

The students have been learning and discussing social justice through the study of Martin Luther King, Jr.  We're celebrating cultural diversity by learning about Ruby Bridges.  Social Studies has also taken the class around the world to study the seven continents.  We'll be making models of some brand new continents of our own creation.

Reading and writing everyday is turning all the Second Graders into authors.  We are currently reading about Abraham Lincoln, just in time for President's Day.
